Value Lecture Notes

Value
Value is an artistic term for light and dark.
Types of Value
  • Achromatic value: absence of color. Black and white only.
  • Chromatic Value
    Chromatic value: values of an object demonstrated by color.
  • Highlight:: spot on an object receiving strongest amount of direct light.
  • Shadow, Shade, Shading:: a dark value on an image or surface caused by the interruption of a light source.
  • Cast shadow: a dark area occuring when that object is placed between that surface and the light source.
  • Chiaroscuro: illusion created by gradual blending of light and shade on a two dimensional surface.
  • Local Value
    Local Value: the natural color of an object in daylight.
Value Pattern The arrangement and the amount of variation in light and dark in a painting or design. Light arrangement is known as high key. Dark arrangement is known as low key.
Value and Emotions
Value can create an emotional reaction.
